Jose “Big Papi” Ayala
Jose “Big Papi” Ayala has been with CrossFit Firebase Orlando for a little over a year. When he first arrived at the Firebase, Jose could be described as on the quiet side, but a year later, he is now one of our more vocal and popular members. Jose is always encouraging others to do their best, or push a little harder, and his dedication to putting in the work is an inspiration to us all. Here is Big Papi’s story.
What is your sport or fitness background? What was your fitness routine like before joining the FireBase?
My sports background is mainly in martial arts, specifically Brazilian Jiu Jujitsu. Before I started CrossFit, my fitness routine consisted of running on the treadmill for at least 45 minutes and doing various weight training. Eventually the routine started to get old and I decided to try something new.
How long have you been a member at the FireBase? What prompted you to look into CrossFit and how did you end up at the FireBase?
I’ve been a member of Firebase for a year. What prompted me into CrossFit were the workout regimen, the friendly competition, and most importantly, the camaraderie among the members.
What have you noticed as the biggest difference in your fitness level since joining the FireBase?
The biggest difference in my fitness level is my cardiovascular endurance has increased a lot, and I’m now able to perform chest to bar pull ups. My strength has also increased tremendously, particularly to lift more weight during squats.
What do you enjoy most about training at the FireBase?
What I enjoy most about training at Firebase is the fact that everyone motivates each other to be a better athlete.
What one movement in CrossFit do you think promotes the best results and why?
I think any of the squat movements promote the best results. The reason being is that a large number of the workouts require some form of squatting (wall balls, thrusters etc)
What one movement do you hate seeing on the whiteboard and why?
The movement I hate seeing on the whiteboard would have to be pull ups. I am still learning how to better recycle the movement.
What would you say to anyone thinking about trying CrossFit, but is skeptical about doing it?
I would tell them to not be intimidated, we all start somewhere.
